Erica Hayes was a law student, an air force officer, an editorial assistant and a musician, before finally landing her dream job: fantasy and romance writer.
She writes dark paranormal and urban fantasy romance, and her books feature tough, smart heroines and colourful heroes
with dark secrets.
She hails from Australia, where she drifts from city to city,
leaving a trail of chaos behind her. Currently, she’s terrorizing the wilds of Northumberland.

Welcome, Erica and thank you for giving us a glimpse into your world. Congratulations on the release of your new book, Scorched. Thanks!

Can you give us a brief outline of the story and its characters?

Sure can 🙂 Verity, the heroine of SCORCHED is a super-powered crime-fighter (yay! Superheroes!) who’s just suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of her archenemy. He locked her in a lunatic asylum as revenge for thwarting his evil plans, and now she’s escaped – but her memory of exactly what happened is splintered. Who betrayed her to the villains, and why? So yeah. It’s an urban fantasy mystery/thriller. With lashings of action and romance.

Sounds good. What led you into the world of urban fantasy?

Well, I was wandering in the woods one night, and I followed this little flickering flame to a secret door under a hill… Yeah. Don’t eat the fairy food, right? I know this now.

So that’s where fairy bread comes from. What inspires your ideas, characters and conflicts?

I’d like to think it was magic, but it isn’t. It’s damn hard work 🙂 but I love coming up with new ideas and plots. It’s the best fun ever! I think my main inspiration is boredom, actually. As in, ‘wow, real life is really boring. Why can’t there be superheroes?’

Since moving to Northumberland, what do you find you miss most about Australia?

1. Weather. Enough said. 2. Real hamburgers. British people don’t understand that hamburgers aren’t just meat and bread. A clue, Britain: salad. And tomato sauce… any sauce, in fact. 3. 3G coverage. In the UK, they think phones are for making calls. Sigh. 4. Milo. It tastes different here! Likewise Cadbury chocolate. I like the British stuff, but it’s just not the same.

What do you love to have near?

Computer. Clothes, I guess, preferably on me 🙂 the whole public nakedness thing? Problematic. Umm… how about chocolate. Does that count as an item?

Yes, it counts. If you could choose anyone as your mentor, who would it be?

Bugs Bunny. That dude enjoys life.

He sure does. You’ve been doing a lot of traveling lately, but where is the most amazing, most unforgettable and most moving places you’ve ever been?

Hmm. Hard to pick just one! There are so many amazing places out there. Ancient ruins have a unique atmosphere, though. I remember visiting Abu Simbel in Egypt, years ago. There’s something almost uncanny about that place. The weight of history, or something.

You obviously love fantasy but in the real world, what chore do you absolutely hate?

Ironing. I just don’t do it. I can’t remember the last time I ironed something.

It’s my pet hate too. If you could learn any skill in the world, imaginary or real, what would it be?

I want to be a wizard like Gandalf. So I can, y’know. Do magic stuff.

What tip would you give us for enjoying life?

Breathe. Oxygen is important. You’re welcome.

Here is the back cover blurb to Scorched: Scorched_sm

In a world where everyone wears a mask, you can’t trust anyone… not even yourself. Verity Fortune was once Sapphire City’s top crime-fighter, wielding her powers of telekinesis to battle the city’s most despicable villains. Now, she’s consumed by a single burning desire: revenge. Against those who took away her mask, her memory, and nearly her life. Having escaped from the asylum they left her to rot in, Verity dons her mask once again and becomes the Seeker, a vigilante warrior for truth. But when she unwittingly uncovers an evil conspiracy deep within her own family, she’s suddenly on the run, alone and hunted by those she thought were on her side…

Another enticing plot full of Intrigue and suspense. It’s been lovely to catch up with you, Erica. Good luck with the new book.
